Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition
J. C. G. Bodenschatz, Kirchliche Verfassung der heutigen Juden, Erlangen 1748, ii, 95 f, Jewish Enc., S.v. ibibbuṭ ha-Ḳeber.) |
, the punishment in the tomb, also called punishment in barzak̲h̲ [q.v.]. The idea is based on the conception that the dead had a continued and conscious existence of a kind in their grave. So arose the doctrine of the two judgements, one which involves punishment or bliss in the grave and a subsequent judgement on the Day of Resurrection [for which see al-Ḳiyāma ]. There are various ideas of what happens between death and resurrection.
1. The grave is a garden of paradise or a pit of hell; angels of mercy come for the souls of believers and angels of punishment for the infidels. The souls of believers are birds in the trees of paradise and will be united with their bodies at the resurrection; martyrs are already in paradise. 2. The dead are tortured by the weeping of the mourners, especially the wicked, hearing the steps of the mourners as they leave; the believer finds his grave spacious, 70 cubits by 70, while the unbeliever is crushed by his grave till his ribs inter lock. The grave asks the dead man about his religion and the believer’s good works answer for him. A sinner may be tormented by a snake of fire which bites him till the day, of judgement. 3. Two angels, Munkar and Nakīr, black with blue eyes, make the dead man sit up and ask him about his religion. The believer answers with the «steadfast word» (Ḳurʾān, xiv, 26) and is shown the place in hell from which he is delivered and the place reserved for him in paradise; there upon he is left alone till the Day of Resurrection. The unbeliever cannot answer, so the angels beat him with iron whips which cause flames, and the blows are heard by all creation except men and d̲j̲inn . It is a less reliable doctrine that punishment is of the spirit only. There are elaborate arguments to prove that those whose bodies are left impaled and those who were eaten by wild beasts suffer from it. The punishment lasts as long as it will please Allāh, according to some authorities till the Day of Resurrection, except on Fridays. It may be eased as long as a branch planted on the grave is green. The angels draw the souls out of the bodies; those of believers come out easily while those of unbelievers have to be dragged out causing severe pain. Variations in detail are many. The questioning of believers lasts seven days, that of unbelievers forty; or unbelievers are not questioned and the angels proceed at once to punishment: martyrs, infants and those who have performed certain acts of supererogation are not questioned. In some sources a distinction is made between the punishment and the pressure (ḍag̲h̲ṭa) in the tomb, the righteous faithful being exempt from the former, not from the latter, whereas the infidels and the sinners suffer punishment as well as pressure. The prophet’s daughter, Fāṭima, and some others escape being crushed. The punishment in the tomb is not plainly mentioned in the Ḳurʾān. Allusions to the idea may be found in several passages, e.g. Ḳurʾān, xlvii, 26: «But how when the angels, causing them to die, shall smite them on their faces and backs»; vi, 92: «But couldst thou see, when the ungodly are in the floods of death, and angels reach forth their hands, saying, Yield up your souls: this day shall ye be recompensed with a humiliating punishment»; viii, 49: «And if thou wert to see when the angels take the life of the unbelievers; they smite their faces and their backs, and taste ye the torture of burning» (cf. further ix, 100; xxiii, 20; lii, 46). The punishment of the tomb is very frequently mentioned in Tradition (see Bibliography), often, however, without the mention of angels. In the latter group of traditions it is simply said that the dead are punished in their tombs, or why, e.g. on account of special sins they have committed. The names of Munkar and Nakīr do not appear in the Ḳurʾan, and once only in canonical Tradition (al-Tirmid̲h̲ī, Ḏj̲anāʾiz, bāb 70). Apparently these names do not belong to the old stock of traditions. Moreover, in some traditions one anonymous angel only is mentioned as the angel who interrogates and punishes the dead (Muslim, Imān, trad. 163; Abū Dāʾūd, Sunna, bāb 39b; Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, iii, 233, 346; iv, 150; al-Ṭayālisī, no. 753). So there seem to be four stages in the traditions regarding this subject: the first without any angel being mentioned, the second mentioning «the» angel, the third two angels, the fourth being acquainted with the names Munkar and Nakīr. This state of things is reflected in the development of the creed. The Fiḳh Akbar I, which may date from the middle of the 2nd/8th century, gives only a short reference to the punishment of the tomb (art. 10). The Waṣiyyat Abī Ḥanīfa, which may represent the orthodox views of the middle of the 3rd/9th century, mentions both the punishment and the interrogation by Munkar and Nakīr. The Fiḳh Akbar II , which may represent the new orthodoxy of the middle of the 4th/10th century A.D., is still more elaborate (art. 23): «The interrogation of the dead in the tomb by Munkar and Nakīr is a reality, and the reunion of the body with the spirit in the tomb is a reality. The pressure and the punishment in the tomb are a reality that will take place in the case of all the infidels, and a reality that may take place in the case of some sinners belonging to the faithful». In the later creeds and works on dogmatics the punishment and the interrogation in the tomb by Munkar and Nakīr are treated in a similar way. The Ḵh̲awārid̲j̲, some Muʿtazilīs and some of the extreme S̲h̲īʿa do not believe in punishment in the grave. Some Muʿtazilīs explained Munkar as the muttering of the unbeliever as he stumbles in his reply and Nakīr as the violence done to him. Others said that Munkar and Nakīr were not individuals but two classes of angels because men were dying every minute in all parts of the world and two individuals could not be everywhere at once. Another rationalisation was that the two were personifications of a man’s good and evil deeds, promising him bliss or misery. The Karrāmiyya [q.v.] taught the identity or Munkar and Nakīr with the two guardian angels who accompany man (ʿAbd al-Ḳāhir al-Bag̲h̲dādī, Uṣūl al-Dīn , Istanbul 1928, p. 246). Al-G̲h̲azzālī holds that all eschatological ideas are a reality that takes place in the malakūt . The origin of the names Munkar and Nakīr is uncertain; the meaning «disliked» seems doubtful. The idea of the examination and the punishment of the dead in their tombs is found among other peoples also. The details to be found in Jewish sources (ḥibbūṭ haḳ-ḳeber) are strikingly parallel to the Muslim ones; the idea is, however, rather late among the Jews and apparently belongs to the post-Islamic period.
The punishment in the grave
A punishment that does not fit into the qurʾānic system of retribution is the torment that will be inflicted on the dead in their graves. It is essentially a theme developed in ḥadīth. Until the day of judgment, the bodies of the deceased lie in their graves, separated from their souls or spirits. In the intermediate state (see barzakh) they continue to exist in some way and can feel pressure, pain or pleasure. Although the possible qurʾānic allusions to this state are sparse, ḥadīth and popular texts discuss it in detail (see Wensinck, Handbook, s.v. «Graves»; Smith/Haddad, Understanding of death, 31-61; van Ess, tg, iv, 521-8). Some people receive a special reward immediately after their death. Those who are killed on the battlefield for the cause of God are not dead; rather «they are alive with their lord, well-provided for» (q 3:169). According to a ḥadīth, prophets, martyrs and innocent children immediately enter paradise (Abū Dāwūd, Sunan, K. al-Jihād, 25; Ibn Ḥanbal, Musnad, v, 58). Another ḥadīth mentions ten persons by name, including the Prophet and the first four caliphs, who «are [already] in paradise» (Abū Dāwūd, Sunan, Sunna, 8; Ibn Ḥanbal, Musnad, i, 187-8; for other privileged categories, see Wensinck, Handbook, s.v. «Graves [who is free from the trial]»; see caliph). Most mortals, however, are ¶ subject to interrogation (musāʾala) or torment in their graves (ʿadhāb al-qabr). A dead man is made to sit up in his grave and asked to render account of his belief and deeds. If he has done any good deeds, these will answer for him. When the result of questioning is positive, the grave is widened, so that his body feels relief. Otherwise, the torment consists in his being further compressed in the grave, which is made too narrow for the body; he may be beaten, flogged or bitten by a fiery snake. There is also the disgrace of his unbelief becoming publicly known (see Aḥwāl al-qiyāma, 39-41; trans. 69-73; Smith/Haddad, Understanding of death, 41-50; van Ess, tg, iv, 528-34; Wensinck/Tritton, ʿAdhāb al-ḳabr). The torment may be performed by an unknown agent; a single angel, who is sometimes called Rūmān; by two angels, who either remain anonymous or are called Munkar and Nakīr (as early as Muqātil, Tafsīr, ii, 193, 405-6; see Wensinck, Munkar wa-Nakīr; id., Creed, 117-9, 163-5); or even by four angels (van Ess, tg, iv, 528, 531). The Qurʾān does not explicitly mention the punishment in the grave. Yet, in tafsīr works various qurʾānic verses are brought into connection with it. According to q 9:101, the hypocrites will be punished twice. This could be once in this world and once in the grave (ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Tafsīr, i, 253; Ṭabarī, Tafsīr, xiv, 444; Zamakhsharī, Kashshāf, ii, 211). Muqātil (d. 150/767; Tafsīr, ii, 193) considers the earlier punishment to be death: «at the moment of death, the angels beat the faces and backs, and Munkar and Nakīr [do so] in the graves.» Similarly in q 32:21 «the nearer punishment, prior to the greater punishment» may consist either in suffering in this world or in the torment in the grave (Ṭabarī, Tafsīr, xxi, 68; Zamakhsharī, Kashshāf, iii, 245). In q 14:27, "God confirms those who ¶ believe with the firm word in the present life and in the hereafter, " the word «hereafter» cannot refer to paradise, since no support is needed there. Hence several exegetes (see exegesis of the qurʾān: classical and medieval) relate it to the punishment in the grave. ʿAbd al-Razzāq (d. 211/827; Tafsīr, i, 296) and al-Zamakhsharī (d. 538/1144; Kashshāf, ii, 377) mention it briefly, Muqātil (Tafsīr, ii, 405-6) and al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923; Tafsīr, xiii, 142-5) treat it at length. God’s guidance apparently also remains in effect in the grave, helping the believers to profess the true creed (see creeds; faith). This is also Muqātil’s comment on q 47:5 (Tafsīr, iv, 45), where he interprets the words "he shall guide them, " i.e. those killed at Badr (q.v.), as «to the right guidance, i.e. the confession of God’s unity (tawḥīd) in the grave.» At q 40:11, "Our lord, you have caused us to be dead twice and brought us to life twice, " al-Ṭabarī (Tafsīr, xxiv, 31) mentions as one interpretation of which he was aware: «They were made to die in this world, then brought to life in their graves, then were interrogated or spoken to, then made to die in their graves and resurrected in the hereafter.» «The punishment other [or: less] than that» in q 52:47 is also sometimes interpreted as the torment in the grave (ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Tafsīr, ii, 201; Ṭabarī, Tafsīr, xxvii, 22; Zamakhsharī, Kashshāf, iv, 26).
