Houris).

(Leemhuis, Ursprünge).

(Leemhuis, Ursprünge).

Abī l-Najūd (d. 127/745), Ḥamza b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt (d. 156/773) и’Alī b.

Abū Muḥammad Makkī b.

Abū l-Qāsim Muḥammad b.

Readings of the Qurʾān — а term generally used to denote the qirāʾāt, the different ways of reciting the Qurʾān. Variant readings are an important aspect of Qurʾān recitation (see recitation of the qurʾān; reciters of the qurʾān), ¶ but qirāʾāt refer to more than that. Other elements — such as differences concerning length of syllables, when to assimilate consonants to following ones, and where to pause or insert verse endings — form an integral part of the different qirāʾāt systems.

Reports about different ways of reciting or reading the Qurʾān were transmitted from the beginning of Islam. Traditions from the time of the Prophet (see ḥadīth and the qurʾān) mention that differences in recitation occurred and that they were permitted by him, but there is no specification of the nature of these differences. In the canonical traditions that go back to Muḥammad these differences in recitation are linked to the seven aḥruf (sing. ḥarf) according to which Gabriel (q.v.; Jibrīl) recited the Qurʾān to Muḥammad. The contexts of these traditions suggest that with ḥarf either a mode of recitation or a manner of pronunciation is meant (see orality; arabic language). From early works, however, it is clear that in the second/eighth century ḥarf was taken to mean the same thing as qirāʾa in its narrow sense of «variant reading.» Early commentaries on the Qurʾān, such as those of Mujāhid (d. 104/722), Sufyān al-Thawrī (d. 162/778), ʿAbdallāh b. Wahb (d. 197/812), ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Ṣanʿānī (d. 211/827), al-Akhfash al-Awsaṭ (d. bet. 210/825 and 221/835) and al-Farrāʾ (d. 207/822), demonstrate that these variant readings did indeed occur across the whole range of lexical issues: from simple pronunciation variants through different case endings or verbal forms, synonyms or near synonyms, to interpolations of whole phrases (see exegesis of the qurʾān: classical and medieval; grammar and the qurʾān).

Readings before the general acceptance of the ʿUthmānic muṣḥaf

The introduction of the ʿUthmānic rasm (unmarked consonantal structure of an ¶ Arabic document; see arabic script; codices of the qurʾān; collection of the qurʾān) does not seem to have had an immediate, decisive effect on the limitation of variant readings with a different rasm. In Sufyān al-Thawrī's relatively short Tafsīr, for instance, 67 variant readings — all introduced with fī qirāʾat… («in the reading of…») or kāna… yaqraʾūnahā… («…they used to read it as…») — are mentioned, 24 of which have a different rasm. Most of these are synonyms that are attributed to Ibn Masʿūd (d. 32/652-3). On the whole, it appears that in the second Islamic century variant readings with a different rasm, especially from Ibn Masʿūd’s codex, were still freely discussed and were called either qirāʾāt or, less commonly, ḥurūf. The reading wa-amdadnāhum bi-ʿīsin ʿīnin («and we shall support them with grayish white ones, with beautiful eyes») instead of wa-zawwajnāhum bi-ḥūrin ʿīnin («and we shall pair them off with white ones, with beautiful eyes»; q 44:54) is mentioned by al-Farrāʾ (Maʿānī, iii, 44) as the qirāʾa of Ibn Masʿūd (see houris). In his commentary on q 44:54, ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Ṣanʿānī (Tafsīr, iii, 210) simply mentions bi-ʿīsin ʿīnin as the ḥarf of Ibn Masʿūd, whereas Sufyān al-Thawrī (Tafsīr, ad q 52:20) notes it as Ibn Masʿūd’s qirāʾa, and al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923; Tafsīr, ad q 44:54) records a tradition which calls this reading a qirāʾa and another which calls it a ḥarf. ʿAbd al-Razzāq (Tafsīr, i, 390) shows a corresponding use of the terms. Even though there seems to be a preference for the term ḥarf, especially in connection with Ibn Masʿūd’s readings, both terms, ḥarf and qirāʾa, are apparently used interchangeably, both for ʿUthmānic and non-ʿUthmānic readings. In connection with q 17:93, ʿAbd al-Razzāq mentions a tradition from Mujāhid: «We did not know what ‘a house of ornament (zukhruf)’ was until we saw in the qirāʾa of Ibn Masʿūd ‘a house of gold (dhahab)’.» Thus, the pos-¶ sibility that ḥarf could refer to a written variant and qirāʾa to an oral one is not borne out by early texts.

Examination of the discussions treating variant readings in the second/eighth and third/ninth centuries indicates that the readings of Ibn Masʿūd gained increasing prominence as the possible or plausible variants of an apparently widely received, more or less standard text which largely agreed with the ʿUthmānic rasm. Al-Farrāʾ (Maʿānī) is particularly noteworthy for his discussion of a wealth of variant readings, especially from Ibn Masʿūd, many of which have a rasm different from that of the ʿUthmānic codex.

The treatment by al-Farrāʾ of these variants shows that in his time they could still be discussed on equal terms with the ʿUthmānic text. And in Sufyān al-Thawrī's and ʿAbd al-Razzāq’s Tafsīrs there is no mention of their being unacceptable. The guiding principle for acceptance of a reading appears to have been that it should be well known, either from a codex or from a well-established tradition. For al-Farrāʾ — but probably also for others — another criterion was clearly in place, namely that an acceptable variant reading should be in accordance with the rules of the Arabic language (Leemhuis, Ursprünge).

Of course, the ʿUthmānic text itself still left room for different readings. The codices of Medina, Mecca, Damascus, Kūfa and Baṣra are said to have presented some slight differences in a number of places, mainly concerning an extra wāw or alif, or a dhī instead of dhū or dhā. The chapter about the differences among these codices in Ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī's (d. 316/929) book on the ancient codices (Jeffery, Materials, 39-49 of the Arabic text) sums them up in lists that appear to have been well established by then.

The discussion, however, of which was ¶ the primary text, the codified text or the recited text, also played an important part in the history of the gradual acceptance of the ʿUthmānic codex as exclusively authoritative. This is clear from the different treatment of variant readings in the Maʿānī l-Qurʾān by al-Akhfash al-Awsaṭ (d. 215/830) and in al-Farrāʾ's work with the same title. Both books serve the same general purpose: to establish a correct reading of the Qurʾān and, where necessary, to advance arguments for their choices of correct readings. Many — but by no means all — of the discussed qirāʾāt are common to both authors. Al-Farrāʾ treats variant readings that presuppose a different rasm much more often than does al-Akhfash. And, unlike al-Farrāʾ, al-Akhfash’s prime criterion for not admitting such readings is that, although they may be good Arabic, they do not agree with the writing of the « muṣḥaf» (q.v.) — by which is quite clearly meant the ʿUthmānic text. This argument is of overriding importance for al-Akhfash and appears to be his guiding principle (Leemhuis, Ursprünge).

The difference in opinion between al-Akhfash and al-Farrāʾ on this issue shows that by the end of the second Islamic century this controversy had not yet been resolved. It also appears from their works that certainly at the same time, but arguably already a generation or two earlier, a generally received text existed which had de facto been accepted as the standard text. The weight of this standard text, however, does not yet appear to have been such that specialists would necessarily have considered variant readings with a different rasm to be invalid on the basis of that fact alone.

Readings accepted after the general authorization of the ʿUthmānic muṣḥaf and those that were not

Two generations later, Ibn Qutayba (213-76/822-89) expressed the view that all ways of reciting the Qurʾān which are in ¶ accordance with the rasm of «our muṣḥaf» (Mushkil, 42) were allowed. He quotes ʿUthmān’s opinion that the difference between qirāʾa and kitāb was a matter of the accent (laḥn) of the Arabs (q.v.; see also dialects) and that the rasm should be left as it was (ibid., 51). In al-Ṭabarī's commentary, which was written near the end of the third/ninth century, the criterion for not accepting a reading was its not being in accordance with the codices of the five cities to which the ʿUthmānic text was sent. Al-Ṭabarī formulated this principle quite explicitly, e.g. in connection with the reading of Abū ʿAmr of li-yahaba laki, "in order that he will give you, " instead of li-ahaba laki, "in order that I shall give you, " in q 19:19. For al-Ṭabarī the correct reading is the latter, because «that is how it is in the codices of the Muslims and this is the reading which the ancient and the recent [authorities] follow, except Abū ʿAmr. It is not permissible to differ from them in what they agree upon. And no one is allowed to disagree with their codices.»

It is in this period that, in liturgical use, readings based on the ʿUthmānic rasm finally eclipsed those presupposing another rasm, notably that of Ibn Masʿūd. This was largely due to the activities of Ibn Mujāhid (d. 324/936), whose view on the admissibility of variant readings was enforced by the vizier Ibn Muqla in 323/935. Ibn Shannabūdh (d. 328/939), who had, in public worship, confidently recited readings of Ibn Masʿūd and other older readings which were not in accordance with the ʿUthmānic codex, was brought to trial and flogged, whereupon he recanted his defense of the non-ʿUthmānic readings (Baghdādī, Taʾrīkh Baghdād, i, 280-1). It can be said that, from then on, the codified text in the form of the ʿUthmānic codex was considered to be the primary text and the only one admissible for reciting the Qurʾān. The meaning of the term qirāʾa¶ shifted from «manner of reciting the Qurʾān» to «manner of reciting the established written text of the Qurʾān.»

In the introduction to his book on the seven readings, Ibn Mujāhid does not specifically defend his choice for presenting the seven readings. But his choice is clearly motivated by three hierarchical criteria: (1) the reading should be in accordance with one of the ʿUthmānic codices of the five cities that had received it; (2) it should be authoritatively transmitted and broadly authenticated, i.e. agreed upon by the majority of scholars; and (3) it should conform to the rules of Arabic grammar.

The first criterion still provided some leeway since it was accepted that there were some slight differences in the rasm of the ʿUthmānic codices of the five cities. Ibn Mujāhid apparently accepted the divergences between the ʿUthmānic codices as they were known in his time. Of the fifty cases mentioned in the lists that Ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī (d. 316/929) gives in his Kitāb al-Maṣāḥif (39-49), only four are not accepted by Ibn Mujāhid in his Kitāb al-Sabʿa fī l-qirāʾāt. Even so, some adaptation could occasionally be devised in order to accommodate a well-known reading to the rasm. The reading of Abū ʿAmr of li-yahaba laki in q 19:19, which was rejected by al-Ṭabarī, is retained by the statement that Abū ʿAmr and Nāfiʿ (according to the transmissions of Warsh and al-Ḥalawānī of Qālūn) read it — according to the rasm, but without the hamza of the alif — as līhaba. But recitation according to another rasm was clearly ruled out, as the example of Ibn Shannabūdh was meant to show. Ibn Mujāhid recognized that, in the past, the majority of Kūfans had recited the Qurʾān according to Ibn Masʿūd; but he had a simple reason for rejecting this qirāʾa: it predated the ḥarf on which ʿUthmān united the people.

That, for Ibn Mujāhid, the second cri-¶ terion had precedence over the third is shown by the story of Ibn Miqsam (fl. fourth/tenth cent.; Baghdādī, Taʾrīkh Baghdād, ii, 206-8), an expert on qirāʾāt who is said to have held as acceptable all readings that the rasm allowed as long as they conformed to good Arabic. Like Ibn Shannabūdh a year later, he was brought to trial, but he recanted before being punished.

In applying these criteria, Ibn Mujāhid selected and presented the readings of authoritative readers from the places that were associated with the presentation of the first five copies of the ʿUthmānic codex: from Medina, Nāfiʿ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān (d. 169/785); from Mecca, ʿAbdallāh b. Kathīr (d. 120/738); from Kūfa, ʿĀṣim b. Abī l-Najūd (d. 127/745), Ḥamza b. Ḥabīb al-Zayyāt (d. 156/773) and ʿAlī b. Ḥamza al-Kisāʾī (d. 189/804); from Baṣra, Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ (d. 154/770); and from Damascus, ʿAbdallāh b. ʿĀmir (d. 118/736).

Ibn Mujāhid not only presented permissible variant readings, he also preserved more or less coherent pronunciation systems. This is also shown by the exposition of more general characteristics of the respective readings. Thus Ibn Mujāhid discusses, for instance, the positions of the different readers about the vowel of the personal suffix -hum (whether it had to become /i/ if the vowel before the /h/ was an /i/, or should remain /u/), and whether the /m/ should be without a vowel or with an added long or short /u/. Likewise, he notes their positions on the assimilation of vowel-less consonants to a similar first consonant of a following word, e.g. whether bal rafaʿahu llāhu ilayhi, «God raised him up to him» (q 4:158) should be pronounced bar rafaʿahu llāhu ilayhi. These peculiarities represent quite different styles of recitation and they most probably reflect original dialectal differences in the pronunciation ¶ of Arabic; but a systematic evaluation of these data remains elusive. At least one phenomenon, however, seems to be significant in this respect. The treatment of the glottal stop in the different readings appears to reflect the variance between ancient east and west Arabian dialects. According to Warsh’s transmission of Nāfiʿ's reading, the hamza, or glottal stop, is not pronounced when it is without a vowel. The same is mentioned of Abū ʿAmr for the recitation of the Qurʾān in the ṣalāt . According to this pronunciation, e.g. alladhīna yuʾminūna, «those who believe» (q 2:3 and passim), is readalladhīna yūminūna, and biʾr, «well, spring» (q 22:45), is read bīr. This is in accordance with what is known of the west Arabian pronunciation and is, moreover, in accordance with the pronunciation that the rasm suggests. Ibn Mujāhid discusses all these general rules in excursuses, mostly in connection with the passages where these general differences first appear.

Ibn Mujāhid’s work had an enormous influence on the recitation of the Qurʾān, especially because he enjoyed the clear support of the ʿAbbāsid authorities (see politics and the qurʾān). From then on, the non-ʿUthmānic readings disappeared, and there were only two kinds of readings based on the ʿUthmānic rasm: those that were allowed in recitation because they were authoritatively transmitted and broadly authenticated, and those that were not. Only the first of these, which later were indicated as mutawātira — Ibn Mujāhid did not use the term — were allowed in recitation. The other readings became known as shādhdha, "solitary, isolated, " i.e. lacking a sufficient number of authoritative chains of transmission. Ibn Mujāhid wrote a large book on these readings, but it is not extant. Indeed, many of these readings and also readings that presuppose a different rasm remained in ¶ circulation in specialized works in order to support or discuss the meaning of words or expressions. For instance, the above-mentioned reading of Ibn Masʿūd in q 44:54 is still noted in connection with that passage in the Tafsīrs of al-Zamakhsharī (d. 538/1144) and Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210).

The combination of the power of the ʿAbbāsid state and Ibn Mujāhid’s authority and reputation in the field of qurʾānic readings proved to be quite effective, and in probably less than half a century his system of the seven canonical readings was largely accepted. It was also further systematized. In some cases, as in the case of Nāfiʿ, Ibn Mujāhid had mentioned quite a number of transmitters and, in other cases, as in the case of ʿĀṣim, only one. In the Taysīr of the Andalusian Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī (371—444/912-1053), there are for each reader only two rāwīs, «transmitters.» Some of these, however, do not figure in Ibn Mujāhid’s list, although this format of dual transmission eventually became the fixed system.

There were other problems that were addressed. Ibn Mujāhid had limited his choice of readers to seven, apparently because these seven met the criterion of broad authentication. At the same time, this choice of seven suggested that these were in fact the seven aḥruf of the prophetic traditions, although this equivalency was not universally accepted. On the basis of the criterion of broad authentication, which was somewhat fluid anyhow, readings of other famous readers were advanced as meeting the same criterion. Already Abū l-Ḥasan Ṭāhir b. ʿAbd al-Munʿim b. Ghalbūn (d. 399/ 1008) had included a second Baṣran reader in his al-Tadhkira fī l-qirāʾāt who became accepted as an eighth reader, namely Abū Muḥammad Yaʿqūb b. Isḥāq al-Ḥaḍramī (d. 205/821). It could also be argued that Abū ¶ Jaʿfar Yazīd b. al-Qaʿqāʿ (d. 130/ 747), one of the teachers of Nāfiʿ who was so eulogized by Ibn Mujāhid, should have his rightful place in the system — especially as both Ḥamza and al-Kisāʾī, who were teacher and pupil, had been included in the list. Khalaf b. Hishām al-Bazzār (d. 229/843), who was one of the transmitters of Ḥamza but who had selected some 120 readings of his own which differed from Ḥamza, had also gained the reputation of an independent reader. This soon led to the general acceptance of these three readers, each again according to two main transmitters. These became known as the «three after the seven.» The question whether these readings were also mutawātira, "broadly authenticated, " or just mashhūra, "well known, " proved in the end to be merely academic. Together with the seven of Ibn Mujāhid, these three became known as the system of the ten and, at least in later times, these ten readings were all considered mutawātira.

But things did not stop there. The idea that the valid transmission of a reading was enough to make it fit for recitation, if the other two criteria were met, continued to attract some followers. Abū Muḥammad Makkī b. Abī Ṭālib al-Qurṭubī (d. 437/1045) was probably the first to advocate this view. Ibn al-Jazarī (d. 833/1429) quotes with approval in his Nashr (13-4) Makkī's opinion that there are three kinds of readings. The first is «what is recited nowadays and in which three characteristics are united.» These characteristics are: (1) transmission from the Prophet on the authority of reliable authorities (thiqāt); (2) accordance with the Arabic in which the Qurʾān was revealed; and (3) conformity with the writing of the muṣḥaf. It is this last criterion that decides whether or not a reading is considered to be based on general agreement. Readings that meet these three criteria are accepted and can ¶ be recited, and whoever rejects them is an unbeliever (see belief and unbelief). The second kind of readings consists of those that meet the first two criteria but not the third. This kind of reading is acceptable but cannot be used in recitation, but whoever rejects it is not an unbeliever — a point, however, on which, Ibn al-Jazarī adds, the scholars do not agree. A minority of them held the view that it was permissible to recite such readings — among others, the reading of Ibn Masʿūd is meant — in the prayer (q.v.; ṣalāt) on the basis that the Companions of the Prophet (q.v.) and the successors of his Companions did so. The third kind consists of readings that do not meet either or both of the two first criteria. These are unacceptable even when they are in accordance with the writing of the muṣḥaf, and whoever rejects them is not an unbeliever.

Whether or not this reformulation of Ibn Mujāhid’s three criteria had made its appearance already in the time of Makkī, is not entirely clear — but the argument that conformity with the ʿUthmānic text in itself constituted ijmāʿ, or general agreement, made room for the addition of another four readers to the list: «the four after the ten.» The adherents of the system of the fourteen readers generally based their opinion on Makkī and Ibn al-Jazarī and gained some, but certainly not general, acceptance. They continued to be regarded as shādhdha — like all the others outside the system of the ten — by most authorities. Nevertheless, the boundary between acceptable and unacceptable readings remained somewhat blurred. Abū l-Qāsim Muḥammad b. Juzayy al-Gharnāṭī (d. 741/1340), who, in his Tafsīr, followed Warsh ʿan Nāfiʿ's reading because "it is the reading that is used in al-Andalus and the other countries of the Maghrib, " gave the following short definition: «The qirāʾāt fall into two classes — the well known, ¶ established (mashhūra), and the isolated, deviant (shādhdha) ones. The mashhūra are the seven readings and those which are similar to them, like the reading of Yaʿqūb and Ibn Muḥayṣin. Shādhdha is what is unlike that» (Tashīl, 7).

In the full system of the fourteen readings, each reader is represented by two riwāyas, or transmissions, and a reading is generally referred to by both the reader and one of the rāwīs in the following form: qirāʾat Warsh ʿan Nāfiʿ, Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim, al-Dūrī ʿan Abī ʿAmr («the reading of Warsh from Nāfiʿ,» or "Ḥafṣ from ʿĀsim, " or «al-Dūrī from Abū ʿAmr»), etc.

Spread and occurrence of the accepted readings

Not much can be said with certainty about the actual occurrence of the different readings, or whether most of them had anything more than theoretical significance. The analysis of the numerous preserved historical Qurʾān manuscripts should be of great help in establishing a clearer picture, but these data have only begun to be analyzed (Dutton, Early muṣḥaf; see manuscripts of the qurʾān).

At first, most readings appear to have been favored by the regions in which they originated. It is conceivable that some readings predate the reader with whom they were associated by Ibn Mujāhid (Dutton, Early muṣḥaf). About the subsequent history in some regions a little bit more is known. In the Maghrib, Ḥamza’s reading was supplanted by Nāfiʿ's, which also became the favored reading in al-Andalus. Nowadays, the most widespread reading in west and north Africa, except Egypt, is Warsh ʿan Nāfiʿ. In Libya and in parts of Tunisia and Algeria Qālūn ʿan Nāfiʿ also has some following. In Egypt, the reading of Warsh ʿan Nāfiʿ was equally well spread until about the tenth/sixteenth century, but the reading of Abū ʿAmr was also not unknown. The commentary known as al-Jalālayn, for instance, follows this reading. The reading of Abū ʿAmr is said to have been dominant in the Ḥijāz, Syria and the Yemen from the fifth/eleventh century, when it superseded Ibn ʿĀmir’s. This latter nevertheless is reported to be in use in some parts of the Yemen. Nowadays, the reading of al-Dūrī ʿan Abī ʿAmr appears still to be used in parts of west Africa, the Sudan, Somalia and Ḥaḍra-¶ mawt. Some (as yet unpublished) leaves of a qurʾānic manuscript that were found during emergency excavations in the town of al-Qaṣr in the Dakhla oasis in the western desert of Egypt show what is an interesting, and apparently eclectic, reading (for material from this excavation, see Figs. iii and iv of sheets). For, in a number of cases, this manuscript — which generally follows Abū ʿAmr — adopts a Meccan reading concerning the pronunciation of the hamza (pace Ibn Kathīr and Ibn Muḥayṣin). This muṣḥaf probably was in use before or in the nineteenth century c.e.

The great unifying change came in the tenth/sixteenth century, as the Ottoman empire adopted the Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim reading. In the course of time this reading became and remained by far the most widespread. Only on the fringes of the Ottoman empire or outside of it, as in northwest Africa, did other readings remain in use. The printing of the Egyptian government edition of the Qurʾān, which appeared in 1342/1923 and which followed the Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim reading, although with a rasm with far fewer alifs, immensely advanced the spread of this reading, albeit after the fall of the Ottoman empire (see printing of the qurʾān). Apart from this reading, only the Nāfiʿ reading in both riwāyas seems to be available in printed form.

Registration of the readings

In modern times it became possible to register the readings on gramophone records (see media and the qurʾān). The earliest recordings appear to date from the 1920s. The first complete recording of the whole Qurʾān in the murattal style according to both the Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim and the Warsh ʿan Nāfiʿ was done in the 1960s by the Egyptian shaykh al-maqāriʾ Maḥmūd Khalīl al-Ḥuṣarī (d. 1980). Since then, numerous recitations of the Qurʾān have become available, especially on audiocassettes, ¶ CDs and websites. The vast majority of these recordings follow the reading of Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim, but recitations according to the readings of Warsh ʿan Nāfiʿ, Qālūn ʿan Nāfiʿ and al-Sūsī ʿan Abī ʿAmr and al-Dūrī ʿan Abī ʿAmr also exist. Recitations are broadcast not only by radio stations (like the Egyptian Idhāʾat al-Qurʾān al-karīm), but also by several sites on the Internet (see computers and the qurʾān). With this modern development the diversity of what is essentially an oral tradition is being revived.

Before modern times the differences among the readings were, of course, transmitted orally, but there were also specialized books that described them. At an early stage, graphical signs were devised which were added to the rasm of manuscripts of the Qurʾān in order to establish the correct pronunciation. First, a system of little dashes was introduced to differentiate between characters with similar forms. Later, these dashes were changed to dots (see arabic script). Two slightly different systems evolved. What is now considered the western system, which was and is still used in the Iberian peninsula and north Africa, differentiates between the letters fāʾ and qāf, by the placement of one dot under the former and one dot above the latter. The eastern system uses one dot above the fāʾ and two dots above the qāf. Nearly the same system is already in place in the inscriptions of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, with the exception that there the fāʾ and qāf are distinguished by one dash above the first and one dash under the latter (see epigraphy of the qurʾān; art and architecture and the qurʾān). Interestingly, the same divergence is found in some early Qurʾān manuscripts, e.g. an early Ḥijāzī muṣḥaf in the Austrian National Library in Vienna (cod. mixt. 917), an early, probably Yemeni one (Ṣanʿāʾ, Dār al-Makhṭūṭāt, inv. no. 01-29.2), and an ¶ early Ḥijāzī muṣḥaf in St. Petersburg (inv. no. E-20). In some instances in this last mentioned example, however, the double dots above the qāf were added (see also calligraphy; ornamentation and illumination).

Probably at a later stage, colored, usually red, dots were added in order to distinguish vowels and the hamza, or glottal stop. Sometimes the hamza is also represented by a dot of a different color, usually green. It is not known when this system was devised, but it may be noted that it is already used in what is claimed to be a very early muṣḥaf among the Qurʾān manuscripts that were found in the Great Mosque of Ṣanʿāʾ (Ṣanʿāʾ, Dār al-Makhṭūṭāt, inv. no. 20-33.1). As with other early manuscripts of the Qurʾān, it is possible that these colored dots were added later, but in the time of Ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī (d. 316/929) this was apparently common practice. He devoted a chapter to it in his Kitāb al-Maṣāḥif (Jeffery, Materials, 144-7 of the Arabic text). Some early manuscripts of the Qurʾān, now housed mainly in the Bodleian Library, mark alternative readings, from the «seven» or the «ten» and also shādhdh readings, by dots of a different color (Dutton, Red dots). The problem with early qurʾānic manuscripts is that no consensus about their dating exists. Most of these are assigned to the third/ninth and fourth/tenth centuries, although some are probably earlier.

Apart from signs for vowels, alifs were also added, usually in red, to make up for an orthography which did not denote a long /a/. In the course of time more signs came into existence to denote further niceties of recitation, like signs for nasalization and signs to indicate where a waqf, or pause, must, could or must not be inserted. In imitation of the Egyptian government edition of the Qurʾān, modern printed editions of the Qurʾān usually include a ¶ list that explains the meaning of these signs. Some remnants of older systems have survived in the western tradition where hamzas are written above, below or in the middle of an alif to denote whether it is to be pronounced with an /a/, an /i/ or a /u/, respectively. An interesting new development is an edition of the Qurʾān (Damascus 1414/1993) according to the reading of Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim in which different colors are used to denote the varying lengths of syllables; gray is used for letters that should not be pronounced.

The knowledge of the readings is nowadays greatly advanced by the publication of Qurʾān editions that give in the margins the differences between the accepted readings according to the system of the «ten» or the «fourteen.»

Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition

Ḳirā'a, чтение. Применительно к Ḳur'ān, ḳirā'a также означает чтение. В настоящей статье термин ḳirā'a используется следующим образом: 1. в общем смысле декламации (a) отдельных частей Ḳur'ān, как это предписано для ритуальной молитвы (ṣalāt), или декламации (b) всего Ḳur'ān, который стал на протяжении многих лет признанным духовным упражнением (ḳirā'a = recitation); 2. указать специальное чтение слова или одного прохода Ḳur'ān (ḳirā'a, pl. Ḳirā'at = вариант); 3.

(Gesch. Des Qor., Iii, 186-9; Blachère, 118-23; Bell-Watt, 49 ff.).

Bergsträsser, в Isl. xx (1932), 5 ff.)

Претца типичного трактата о uṣūl al-ḳirā'a, в Islama, vi (1934), 230, 291—331).

История текста Ḳur'ān и ḳirā'āt также изучалась европейскими и американскими ориенталистами, в частности, Nöldeke и Goldziher, а затем A. Jeffery, G. Bergsträsser, O. Pretzl и E. Beck (см. Bibl.).

Ḳirāʾa, reading. Applied to the Ḳurʾān, ḳirāʾa also means recitation . In the present article the term ḳirāʾa is used as follows: 1. in the general sense of the recitation (a) of single parts of the Ḳurʾān, as prescribed for the ritual prayer (ṣalāt), or the recitation (b) of the entire Ḳurʾān, which has become, in the course of years, an accepted spiritual exercise (ḳirāʾa = recitation) ; 2. to indicate a special reading of a word or of a single passage of the Ḳurʾān (ḳirāʾa, pl. ḳirāʾat = variant); 3. to indicate a particular reading of the entire Ḳurʾān (ḳirāʾa = reading). In the third case one speaks of the ḳirāʾa of Ibn Masʿūd or of the ḳirāʾa of the people of Ḳūfa as opposed to the ḳirāʾa of other authorities or to the redaction authorised by ʿUt̲h̲mān.

The recitation of texts proclaimed by Muḥammad as revelation played from the very beginning a prominent part in the Muslim community. This is already evident from the fact that the collection of these revelations was designated as ḳurʾān «recitation». However, the Ḳurʾān had not yet been codified at the death of the Prophet and the form of Arabic letters used to note down single parts of it and later on the whole collection was very incomplete; in a group of consonants a choice between two or more readings was possible. Consequently, disagreements soon arose on exactly how to read the revealed text. The promulgation of a canonical redaction of the Ḳurʾān under the third caliph ʿUt̲h̲mān (soon after 30/650) was intended to remedy this evil. Copies of this redaction were sent from Medina to Kūfa, Baṣra and Damascus, the most important cities of ʿIrāḳ and Syria. After a relatively short period, this redaction seems to have been generally accepted as the official text, finally even at Kūfa where Ibn Masʿūd (d. 33/653), the distinguished Companion of the Prophet, who maintained a «reading» of his ¶ own, had at first called upon his followers to resist.

On the whole, the text of ʿUt̲h̲mān had a strong unifying influence, which was felt to an increasing extent. But a really uniform ḳirāʾa was not thereby guaranteed. During recitation, which was essentially based on oral tradition, readings deviating from the official edition continued to be followed. In so far as these readings went back to recognised authorities of the early period and to trustworthy witnesses, they were also noted by commentators on the Ḳurʾān and philologists, and turned to exegetic or linguistic account. Thus variant readings of Ibn Masʿūd, Ubayy b. Kaʿb (d. 29/649 or 34/654) and other early «readers» which deviated from the official text, were transmitted in early scholarly literature and have therefore come down to us, at least in extracts. The ḳirāʾa of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (d. 110/728) was later even inserted among the «fourteen readings» (see below).

Further development was on characteristic lines. The untramelled freedom with which the text had been treated in the earliest times was followed by a period of systematisation and limitation of the possibilities of the «readings» which the consonantal text and the oral tradition offered. However, complete unification was not achieved. People neither would nor could simply set aside the power of tradition. Thus the free choice on the ḳirāʾa was limited, but not entirely forbidden. While reading the officially accepted consonantal text (already in itself constituting a limitation), the «reader» could still make a choice between a certain number of authorities. In its detail the history of Ḳurʾān reading is very complex. The scanty and sometimes unreliable sources leave much uncertain. In general, however, the course of development is clearly recognisable, thanks in particular to the penetrating studies of G. Bergsträsser (in collaboration with O. Pretzl) and E. Beck (see Bibl .). In this article only the essential aspects will be briefly mentioned.

Important progress in the standardisation of the «reading» was achieved by differentiating the letters b, t, th, n, y etc. by means of strokes (later dots) and by introducing vowel signs. The redaction of ʿUt̲h̲mān, being officially recognised, gained in importance by this clarification. With the passage of time, other differences were gradually eliminated. Such a levelling seems at first to have been accomplished within single cities (amṣār), and later on through the influence of one city on another. Majority readings tended to prevail over minority readings, thus leading towards a general consensus. In the first half of the 4th/10th century, Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid (d. 324/936), the influential Imām of the «readers» in Bag̲h̲dād, publicly and with governmental support brought this process to its logical conclusion. He banned further use of the ḳirāʾat of Ibn Masʿūd and other uncanonical readings. Ibn S̲h̲anabūd̲h̲, a contemporary and fellow-reader of Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid, complied with this ban only after he had been arraigned and flogged. In addition, Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid declared the reading of the ʿUt̲h̲mānic consonantal text, standardised by tradition and consensus, to be obligatory, and compelled Ibn Miḳsam, an other fellow-reader, to renounce the claim which he had maintained until that moment that he could decide for himself on the punctuation and vocalisation of the text. As authorities on the traditional reading of the ʿUt̲h̲mānic text, Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid recognised seven «readers» belonging to the 2nd/8th century, among whom were ʿĀṣim of Kūfa (d. 128/745) and Nāfiʿ of Medina (d. 169/785), whose readings have both remained authoritative ¶ to the present day, that of ʿĀṣim in the east and centre of the Islamic world, and that of Nāfiʿ— with some exceptions—in North Africa from Egypt westwards. To the seven «readers» recognised by Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid were added later on three others, and afterwards another four, but these never attained the same standing as the first seven. Furthermore, since Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid, in mentioning ʿĀṣim—one of the Seven—had often named two others, Abū Bakr S̲h̲uʿba (d. 193/809) and Ḥafṣ (d. 180/796), who transmitted ʿĀṣim’s reading independently of one another, it became customary to add also the names of two other traditionists to each of the other six and of the «Three after the Seven». Thus originated the bewildering number of names in the list of readers recognised as canonical (Gesch. des Qor. , iii, 186-9; Blachère, 118-23; Bell-Watt, 49 ff.).

After the readings had been limited to the «Seven» recognised as canonical, and to the other «Three after the Seven» and «Four after the Ten», all the others were eliminated in the practice of recitation. The «readers» henceforward had to keep exclusively to the canonical readings. This however did not completely rule out the uncanonical «deviant» (s̲h̲awād̲h̲d̲h̲) readings. They were later adduced as useful evidence in the practical interpretation of the Ḳurʾān and in the elucidation of linguistic problems. Besides his «Book of the Seven» (Kitāb al-Sabʿa, ed. S̲h̲. Ḍayf, see Bibl .) Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid also composed a «Book of deviant readings» (Kitāb al-Shawād̲h̲d̲h̲), which is not extant. The debate on the uncanonical ḳirāʾāt was carried on throughout the centuries in a scholarly literature of growing importance. Ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sid̲j̲istānī’s (d. 316/928) Kitāb al-Maṣāḥif and Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid’s works already mentioned were followed—to cite only a few of the most important names—by the monographs on uncanonical readings of Ibn K̲h̲ālawayh (d. 370/980) and Ibn D̲j̲innī (d. 392/1002), by al-Dānī’s (d. 444/1053) classical manual of the Seven Ḳurʾān-readings (verse version by al-S̲h̲ātibī, d. 590/1194) and his works on orthography, punctuation of the vowels and other punctuation marks, by Ibn al-D̲j̲azarī’s (d. 833/1429) works on the Ten readings and on the classes (ṭabaḳāt) of readers, and finally by al-Bannāʾ’s (1117/1705) book on the Fourteen readings. For the practice of recitation, the literary tradition constituted, in contrast with early times, an almost indispensable complement to oral instruction.

The knowledge of Ḳurʾān-reading (ʿilm al-ḳirāʾa) had become a distinct theological discipline and had many practitioners, few of whom, however, wrote books on it. In this connection, it becomes understandable that the official Egyptian Ḳurʾān of 1924 (following the reading of ʿĀṣim in the tradition of Ḥafṣ) is not founded on early Ḳurʾānic manuscripts, but is the result of reconstructions derived from the literature on the readings (see Bergsträsser, in Isl . xx (1932), 5 ff.)

In the recitation by professional «readers» (see above), a distinction is made between an incantatory, a rapid and a moderate tempo (tartīl or taḥḳiḳ — ḥadr — tadwīr). The manner of execution can be designated as cantillation, but there are also intricate musical settings (see the studies by K. Huber and M. Talbi). The technique of reciting is laid down in detail in works on the ḳirāʾāt.

Special importance is attributed to the rules of pronunciation, including the theory of assimilation (idg̲h̲ām [q.v.], iddig̲h̲ām), the modification of a into e (imāla), extension (madd), forms of the pause (waḳf) and the conservation or alleviation (tabdīl) of hamza ¶ (see O. Pretzl’s analysis of a typical treatise on the uṣūl al-ḳirāʾa, in Islamica, vi (1934), 230, 291—331). The time required for private oral instruction is greatly increased by the fact that, since Ibn Mud̲j̲āhid, several different Imāms and Schools of Readers have been officially recognised. According to a distinctive method known as «assembling» (d̲j̲amʿ) «the Ḳurʾān verse is divided into small fragments, each one of which is recited as often as there are variants of it, each time with another variant» (see the instructive passage, «Koranlesungsunterricht», by Bergsträsser, in Isl., xx (1932), 36-42). When the whole of the Ḳurʾān is recited, the separate readings must be considered as self-contained units; the «readers» are thus not free to combine the text of their recitation from different ḳirāʾāt (Bergsträsser, ibid., 29 ff.). These, however, are details which concern only an élite of «readers». The great mass of the ḳurrāʾ , consisting largely of blind men, would in any case limit themselves from the start to the study of a single reading (Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim, in the west Wars̲h̲ ʿan Nāfiʿ). In general, the originally large number of readings has given way in the course of centuries to a far-reaching uniformity both in the practice of recitation and in the theoretical ʿilm al-ḳirāʾa.

The history of the text of the Ḳurʾān and of the ḳirāʾāt has also been studied by European and American orientalists, notably Nöldeke and Goldziher, followed by A. Jeffery, G. Bergsträsser, O. Pretzl and E. Beck (see Bibl.). Important sources have been published, and separate stages of development reconstructed. Jeffery, and likewise Bergsträsser in association with Pretzl, planned an apparatus criticus for the Ḳurʾān. Bergsträsser and Pretzl had begun a systematic collection of photostats of early manuscripts of the Ḳurʾān in the hope of discovering variants not registered in the literature. Because of their untimely death (1933 and 1941), this research came to a standstill. Jeffery also died (1959) without having realised his vast project. The task, however, remains to evaluate the known and still unknown variants for the study of old Arabian dialects and in general for a future historical grammar of Arabic. Whether much will emerge to the profit of the historical interpretation of the Ḳurʾān remains to be seen. The harvest so far obtained by Bergsträsser and Beck is rather meagre and promises no new results of any importance. During the last years of his life, Pretzl himself had apparently «retreated from the generally high appreciation of the manuscripts and readings of the Ḳurʾān». August Fischer, who noted this en passant in a posthumous article (Isl. xxviii (1948), 5 f. n. 4), also cited a passage from Spitaler’s obituary of Pretzl (ZDMG xcvi (1942), 163 ff.). In Fischer’s opinion the Ḳurʾānic textual variants «for the most part (emphasis by Fischer) consist of no more than attempts at emendation made by philologically trained Ḳurʾān specialists on difficult passages in the ʿUt̲h̲mānic redaction».
